Why is Colour So Important in Early Development?
For babies and children, understanding colour is an essential building block for all aspects of learning.
Research shows that exposing a baby to different shades of colours can stimulate their mind and can help them make important colour connections during their early years.
Colour is not only exciting for a child, but it also helps with their learning.
Learning colours allows them to recognise significant visual cues such as danger and stop (Red), the meaning behind traffic lights, and help them distinguish hot from cold.
Being able to recognise colours also helps with educational skills too such as creative writing. For example, when they are exercising their imagination when creating a story, colour is an important part of descriptive techniques!
Understanding colour strengthens their ability to communicate effectively.
Colour Recognition Activities to Try
Colour recognition takes place by three to four years, and children should be able to name basic colours through frequent exposure. Here’s some colour recognition games and activities we think would be useful to engage your toddler.
